After graduating from the University of Oregon I spent nineteen years in retailing, where customer service was the top priority. Here, at Rowe & Deming, customer service is still my top priority.
What do you enjoy doing when not working?
Being born and raised in The Dalles, spending time with family is important to me. And as my license plate frame states, "I'd rather be stitching!" I usually carry some form of counted thread embroidery with me, in case I find a few spare minutes.

My grandma always says "things aren't so bad that they couldn't be worse!"

How would you describe your role at Rowe & Deming?
As a staff accountant, my role is two parts: one, assist the partners and other staff members to meet firm needs and client requests and two, meeting the day-to-day and long term accounting needs of our clients, including preparing tax returns, payroll, bookkeeping, or special projects.
What is important to you as you work with Rowe & Deming clients?
What is important to me as I work with Rowe & Deming clients is that clients feel like their issues are being heard and their needs are being met with the work we do at the firm. I believe we are here for the clients to do the best, most knowledgeable work on the projects at hand in the most efficient manner possible.
What is your education and experience related to your role at Rowe & Deming?
My Bachelor's degree is in Public Relations from the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) and after working in the P.R./media field for approximately 6 years, I decided a change was needed. I took a few accounting courses at the local community college, decided accounting was the route to take, and went full steam ahead at Portland State University to meet the educational requirements needed to sit for the C.P.A. exam. Amazingly, the C.P.A. exam doesn't require a lot of English Lit or History knowledge.
Now I'm in the process of taking the tests required to become a Certified Public Accountant. I guess you could say that would directly relate to my role at Rowe & Deming as a staff accountant.
What do you enjoy doing when not working?
I enjoy hanging out with family and friends, puttering around the house and garden, being a tourist, and generally doing anything that's fun.
What is a quote or saying that your find personally meaningful?
Don Meyer's speech while accepting the Jimmy V Award at the 2009 ESPY Awards resonated. I think of it when working on a difficult work project, studying for the C.P.A. exam, or debating whether or not to go to the gym. It was a piece of advice from John Wooden's father given to John upon graduation from grade school...
"Don't whine, don't complain, and don't make excuses."

How would you describe your role at Rowe & Deming?
As a staff accountant my primary function is to prepare all types of tax returns. I also assist clients with general and business planning and ensure the coordination of other services provided out of the firms Hood River office. Ultimately I'm here to help clients understand the relevant issues and make informed choices.
What is important to you as you work with Rowe & Deming clients?
It is important to me that clients feel respected and empowered. I am fortunate to work with a very diverse group of clients. I respect their differences and am motivated by their accomplishments. My work provides me with the opportunity to help our clients to better understand their own situations. Knowledge gained through understanding is empowering. Helping clients to attain that knowledge is incredibly rewarding.
What is your education and experience related to your role at Rowe & Deming?
Twenty years ago I received a Bachelor's degree in Finance. Two and a half years ago I accepted a position with Rowe & Deming and returned to college to study accounting. The eighteen years between that finance degree and my employment with Rowe and Deming were filled with real world finance and business experience. I have worked in accounting, finance, insurance, telecom, construction, manufacturing, and social services. I have worked for businesses, started businesses and ran businesses. This experience really helps me in working with clients at Rowe and Deming. I know their concerns as business owners and managers because I have lived those same concerns.
I am rapidly gaining education and experience in tax and accounting, passed my first CPA exam in August of 2009 and am plan to take my fourth and final exam in the summer of 2010. I look forward to becoming a CPA and to the additional value that the accreditation will allow me to bring to clients.
What do you enjoy doing when not working?
For the last couple of years my life outside of work has been consumed by study. During this time my wife Lisa and two sons Cole and Max have been incredibly supportive. Like many other Hood River families we enjoy camping, fishing, biking, and skiing. I HAPPILY anticipate that day that I will be able to resume these activities with them.
What is a quote or saying that you find personally meaningful?
There are actually two that come to mind. The first being "good things happen to those who make them happen". The second "do not shoot it if you are not going to eat it". Both came from my Grandfather Joe Rothman. Grandpa Joe was a self made man who believed that with planning and hard work just about anything was possible. He lived what he believed and it worked. He also got me to stop shooting crows.

How would you describe your role at Rowe & Deming?
As a staff accountant and CPA, my role will be to support our clients in all aspects of their financial matters, from preparation of their individual income tax returns, to helping them realize their business dreams, and assisting clients in maximizing their personal wealth through estate and tax planning.
What is important to you as you work with Rowe & Deming clients?
My primary goal will be to service our client's needs in an accurate and timely manner, doing what is best for the client within the boundaries of the law. Excellence in service includes communicating with clients in terms they will understand, and helping them understand the financial processes they are paying for at the firm.
What is your education and experience related to your role at Rowe & Deming?
Accounting is a second career for me. After completing a career in Naval Aviation, I used my educational benefits to obtain an accounting degree from Portland State University. While in school, I obtained my Licensed Tax Preparer & Tax Consultant designations for the State of Oregon. I worked three tax seasons with H & R Block, preparing individual income tax returns while supervising a branch office. Before graduating from PSU, I passed the Enrolled Agents exam and received certification which allowed me to represent tax payers before the Internal Revenue Service. Since receiving my BS in accounting, I have worked for the IRS as a Revenue Agent, a Medicare auditor, over 2 years as staff accountant for a CPA firm, and for the last four years as financial manager for a local short-line railroad. I passed the CPA exam and received my CPA certification in January 2006. My wife and I own the Learning Farm Preschool, which she operates, while I maintain the financials. My varied experience, in and out of the financial arena, gives me a perspective I believe will help me better serve our clients.
What do you enjoy doing when not working?
I have enjoyed target shooting from the time I received my first rifle from my father, as a young lad,. I was awarded the Leatherneck award in Marine boot camp for highest score with an M-16 in my platoon. Although I love putting holes in targets, my real passion is karaoke. Nothing unwinds me after a stressful day at the office, like a hot mike and rock-& roll. (This tends to cause a little contention between my loving wife & me, as she prefers quiet after a long day with 50 plus kids). I am a rock star in my own mind.
What is a quote or saying that you find personally meaningful?
Aristotle once said, "The unexamined life is not worth living". To me, this means that if we do not look back upon our life's experiences and the actions and decisions we have made, we will not learn and progress from our past. After all, the world is a classroom, and unfortunately, there are very few recesses. Also, our motto in the Navy was, "Work hard-Play hard". It takes hard work to achieve a worthwhile goal. But, if you earn it, try to enjoy the fruits of your labor.
